Insight into industry
1. Institute for East & West International Education
In 2008, EWIE established the Institute for East & West International Education, which aims to promote international education and the integration and innovation of educational ideas through in-depth industry research and extensive international cooperation. Since its establishment, the Institute has been focusing on exploring the similarities and differences between the Eastern and Western education systems, striving to become a leading research institution to promote global education exchanges and cooperation, and to provide valuable research findings for policy makers, educators, and students. As a bridge connecting the Eastern and Western educational communities, the Institute also actively organizes various seminars, workshops, and academic conferences to promote and facilitate the sharing of international education practices.
2. Gain insights into the development of international education
The Institute for East & West International Education is committed to examining the development of international education, as well as its opportunities and challenges, from the perspectives of global development and multiculturalism. It studies and analyzes the development trends of international education, emphasizing field research and case studies, and strives to remain open and forward-looking. The Institute maintains close cooperation with many top domestic and international universities, research institutions, and government departments, and is committed to promoting information dissemination and experience exchange, as well as fostering international education cooperation and collaborative innovation.
With many years of experience in international education cooperation, the Institute for East & West International Education has conducted in-depth analyses of the characteristics of Chinese and foreign courses and the needs of Chinese students. In 2007 and 2009, it developed international undergraduate and master’s preparatory courses, and has successively designed international courses adapted to the American and European education systems. In the area of high school internationalization, the Institute has conducted extensive field research, published a number of research reports on high school international education, and collaborated with various institutions to organize forums and seminars on the internationalization of high school education. Based on these research results, the Institute initiated and developed the group standard, “Specifications for High School Excellence International Program Evaluation,” in 2019. This evaluation system consists of 6 dimensions, 18 main indicators, and 83 observation points, and was officially released in December 2022. At the same time, the Institute launched research on the “Standards for the Professional Competence of High School International Program College Counselors,” aiming to promote the professional development of college admissions counseling for high school international programs. In terms of regional cooperation, the Institute actively participated in the “China-Thailand Higher Education Forum,” making it a flagship event during the “China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week.” Additionally, to meet the needs of Chinese students for the world’s top academic platforms, the Institute helped the development of the “Scholars Hub” project, leveraging doctoral supervisors from international universities to build an academic resource network and provide targeted doctoral application support for top innovative talents. Through these diversified initiatives, the Institute consistently promotes the innovative development of international education research, standard development, and practice, making significant contributions to the internationalization of Chinese education.
3. Promote the development of students’ international attainment
Based on a survey of more than 20 universities, the Institute developed the “Youth Global Competence Talent Training Program,” which adopts the “999 model” (9 elective courses, 9 lectures, and 9 practical activities) of “course + practice.” The program focuses on three subject areas: “Contemporary China,” “International Understanding,” and “Cross-Cultural Communication.” In view of the national demand for talented young people to support the country’s future development, the Institute initiated a project to cultivate college students’ international literacy. It strives to explore a new model for accelerating the training of high-level international talents with international competitiveness through the “second classroom” initiative, carried out in cooperation with domestic universities and colleges. The program aims to align with the internationalization goals of these institutions and accelerate the cultivation of high-level interdisciplinary talents equipped with patriotic passion, global vision, and international competitiveness. The plan was implemented in October 2021, with the participation of more than 150 universities so far.
From 2022 to 2023, the Institute directed and participated in a survey on the status of global competence training in vocational colleges and universities of applied sciences, and developed a global competence training and development plan for students at these institutions. In 2024, we conducted a survey on the international attainment of more than ten high schools in Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu Province. Based on the survey, we formulated the “Plan for High School International Literacy Training” and are planning to invite select high schools to participate in the implementation of the project. Through promoting the development of international attainment education at the high school level, we aim to empower the “generation that face the world as squarely.”
