President WANG Wei Visits Partner Institutions in Singapore

From January 23 to 24, at the invitation of partner institutions in Singapore, President WANG Wei of the East & West International Education Group (EWIE) led a delegation to visit Singapore. The delegation toured the Kaplan Singapore Campus, the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), Newcastle University Singapore Campus, Curtin University Singapore Campus, and the American Center for Education (ACE). During the visit, Mr. Wang and his team held candid discussions with leaders of the respective institutions on matters such as mutual recognition of international curricula and opportunities for EWIE International Curriculum Program students to study in Singapore. Consensus was reached in multiple areas of cooperation, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration. Ms. YAN Haixia, General Manager of EWIE’s Wuhan Center, and Mr. FENG Jishang, Director of the International Curriculum Center, participated in the visit and meetings.

During the visit to the Kaplan Singapore Campus, President WANG Wei and his delegation met with the Executive Vice President and the Head of the International Market Department. The institution provided a detailed introduction to the learning, living, services, further education, and employment opportunities for Chinese students studying in Singapore. Kaplan Singapore will actively promote the recognition of EWIE’s IYO International Year One Program, IPMP Master’s Preparatory Program, and Murdoch University’s Master’s Program by University College Dublin, which is ranked 126th in the world.

At the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), President WANG Wei held talks with the Head of International Admissions and Cooperation. Both sides introduced their respective international curriculum programs and the achievements of their domestic cooperative projects. They explored potential areas for educational collaboration, leveraging their complementary strengths to promote credit exemptions between SIM’s Diploma Program and EWIE’s IYO International Year One Program. This means that future IYO students who meet the academic requirements can transfer to SIM to continue their studies. After completing all courses in Singapore, students will receive a bachelor’s degree from the University of Birmingham or the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), providing EWIE International Curriculum Program students with another fast track to world-renowned universities.

During the visit to Newcastle University Singapore Campus, President WANG Wei met with the CEO, as well as the heads of administrative operations and international admissions. The university offers a one-year master’s program in renewable energy, primarily enrolling local Singaporean students. Starting from 2025, the university hopes to collaborate with EWIE to recruit Chinese students, providing opportunities for Chinese university graduates to obtain degrees from prestigious UK institutions. Newcastle University is ranked 129th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings. Studying the master’s program in Singapore can save students more than one-third of the cost compared to studying in the UK. Renewable energy is a cutting-edge field, and graduates have significant competitive advantages and development potential whether they return to China or work in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries.

At Curtin University Singapore Campus, President WANG Wei held talks with the Vice President and the Head of International Admissions. Curtin Singapore will expedite the recognition of EWIE’s IYO International Year One Program. In the future, students who complete the IYO program can study for two years at Curtin Singapore Campus and receive the same bachelor’s degree as those studying in Australia. Both sides also discussed cooperation in the Scholars Hub project. Curtin Singapore plans to enroll 30 students annually for doctoral programs in fields such as Energy, Engineering, Education, and Business Intelligence. Students recommended through the Scholars Hub project will receive priority review and admission. Curtin Singapore Campus is adjacent to the National University of Singapore (NUS), allowing students to access some of NUS’s educational resources. Curtin University, a century-old institution located in Perth, Western Australia, is ranked 174th in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and is highly favored by Chinese students.

During the visit to the American Center for Education (ACE), President WANG Wei met with the Executive Vice President and the Head of China Affairs. Both parties aim to leverage their respective resources, move beyond traditional student recruitment models, and innovate collaborative approaches to jointly offer bachelor’s degree programs from prestigious UK universities. Established in 2007, ACE is a private institution approved by Singapore’s relevant administrative departments to award diploma qualifications. The institution can collaborate with foreign universities to introduce their programs and award bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from partner institutions. Currently, ACE offers American university general education courses, allowing students to transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Madison or the State University of New York after two years of study in Singapore. Collaboration with ACE will open a unique pathway for EWIE in the Singapore study abroad market, enhance EWIE’s influence in Singapore, and provide valuable exploration for the internationalization of EWIE’s international curriculum programs.

Through these visits, EWIE has further strengthened its cooperation with Singaporean educational institutions. This will help EWIE deepen and solidify its international education business in Singapore, enhance the influence and recognition of EWIE’s international curricula among Singaporean institutions, and provide new resources for the development of the Group’s related businesses.

During the visit to Newcastle University Malaysia, President WANG Wei and his team met with the university’s president and executive vice president. The university highlighted its specialization in medical sciences, boasting advanced teaching facilities and excellent internship opportunities, and expressed a desire to attract more Chinese students. The university welcomes applications from IFC foundation program students and also accepts IYO students for its biomedical undergraduate program, awarding the same degree certificates as those issued in the UK. Currently, over 60 students from the EWIE International Foundation Courses have applied and received conditional offers. The university is also working to establish language bridging courses, which, upon completion, would exempt students from taking IELTS, a significant advantage for those with conditional offers. The business school leadership also expressed strong support for EWIE’s collaboration with Chinese universities to promote a direct master’s program, offering domestic undergraduate graduates the opportunity for direct admission to the University of Southampton.

At the University of Reading Malaysia, the delegation met with the heads of international project cooperation and the international market department. The university has recognized the IFC international foundation program, with several graduates applying in recent years, and is actively working towards recognizing the EWIE’s IYO International Year One program. Students can apply to transfer to the UK campus for their final one or two years, and regardless of whether they study in the UK, they will receive the same degree certificates as those issued in the UK.

All three universities inspected are ranked within the top 200 globally. The establishment of UK university branches in Malaysia is a significant innovation in the history of international education development. The cultural proximity between China and Malaysia, the low cost of studying in Malaysia, and the high international recognition of UK degrees make these Malaysian branches increasingly popular among Chinese students. With less than one-third of the cost of studying in the UK, students can access world-leading higher education, essentially studying at a prestigious global university close to home.

Dean Wang Wei Champions International Education Cooperation in Global Education News interviews

Mr. Wang Wei, CEO of EWIE and Wiseway International, was interviewed by The PIE News at the beginning of the year. He discussed the impact of the epidemic on international education, including the effects on students going abroad, changes in destination countries, employment opportunities for returning students, and the prospects of the study abroad industry in China, which brought us many new perspectives and thoughts.

http://www.ewiedu.cn/uploadfile/2022/0117/20220117101646282.png

In the interview, Mr. Wang Wei first briefly introduced EWIE. Founded in 1999, Wiseway has been dedicated to international educational research and services for over 22 years. EWIE have 15 offices in China, mainly conducting enrollment work for 15 countries including the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2008, the customer base of EWIE expanded from students and parents to educational institutions, starting with an international preparatory course, and has been operating in 10 Chinese universities, recruiting approximately 800 to 1000 students annually. As an international educational research and service institution, EWIE cover China’s educational research, project development, and university cooperation. We always insist on directly serving students and providing services to universities, from long-term academic education to shorter semester exchanges and two-week learning experience projects.

Mr. Wang Wei, an expert in the international education in China, shared his views on the impact of the epidemic on the employment of international students. He noted that the outlook for students studying abroad is not optimistic, mainly due to the impact of COVID-19 on the tourism industry. The relaxed attitude adopted by western society has led many students and parents to worry about the safety problems after going abroad. In addition, the international relations between China, the United States, and China Australia also have a certain impact on the choices of students. However, in the medium to long term, the number of students studying abroad each year will continue to increase, possibly due to government encouragement and school funding, which is more evident in short-term exchange programs. At present, the UK is definitely the preferred destination for studying abroad. British universities also have many joint training programs in China, such as 2+2 or 3+1 programs. China is becoming an economic powerhouse, and universities have a large amount of funding to support international projects, so some students choose to study in China. After completing the project, many students choose to continue pursuing a master’s or even doctoral degree in the UK, which also contributes to the number of students studying in the UK. Regarding the domestic job market, the pressure on young graduates will only increase. After returning to China, students usually directly enter the IT and business fields, and now many students have also gone to the popular majors of finance and banking. However, the difficulty in finding jobs is not all because of COVID-19. The changes in China’s social and political policies will also affect all aspects of the economy and thus affect the employment of graduates.

In the interview, Mr. Wang Wei discussed the market prospects and existing challenges of the study abroad industry in China. He believes that while this market is not currently a priority for domestic universities and enrollment agencies, the number of students studying in China will gradually increase. This is evident from the number of students from neighboring Asia coming to China is growing. However, due to the current low fees charged by Chinese universities for international students, resulting in high project operating costs, a successful business model has not yet been found. The East and West are also exploring together with domestic universities, hoping to provide more diversified services for universities in the near future, and bring students a higher quality and multi-level international experience.

5 Dean Wang Wei delivered a keynote speech at the special seminar of the 2021 China International Education Conference
On October 21st, Dean Wang Wei of the EWIE Research Institute delivered a keynote speech at the 2021 China International Education Annual Conference on “Expanding and Enhancing the International Perspective of Teachers and Students”. Dean Wang Wei proposed in his speech that “international perspective” is a way of thinking. It is a thinking method that focuses on, observes, and analyzes the connections between different civilizations, economies, and societies of humanity based on patriotism. Therefore, in terms of talent cultivation, patriotism, international perspective, and cross-cultural communication should be organically combined, and the ultimate goal is to cultivate virtue and talent. 2、 Foreign languages are an important tool for enhancing international perspectives. Language is a tool for communication and the foundation for cultural exchange. The foundation of people to people communication is language exchange. Promoting the joint construction of the “the Belt and Road” and building a community with a shared future for mankind puts forward higher requirements for foreign language education. It is necessary to optimize the curriculum structure, innovate the talent training model, and accelerate the training of professionals with both high-level foreign language skills and professional knowledge and skills; Accelerate the cultivation of young people with comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, who are rooted in China and integrate with foreign countries, and have an international perspective in the new era. 3、 Society is an important force and classroom for the internationalization of education. The cultivation of international perspective or global competence has actually exceeded the capabilities and scope of a single institution in many aspects in terms of resource requirements. Social participation can not only provide schools with supplementary resources for international development, but also provide students with broader paths and channels for social practice. Therefore, we advocate for full international exchange and cooperation, effectively integrating high-quality educational resources from abroad with domestic education and teaching. Only in this way can we actively participate in the transformation of the global governance system.
